Landfill Gas Emission Measurements
Legal context
Landfill gases measurement is regulated by Ordinance on methods and conditions of waste disposal, categories and working conditions on landfills (OG 117/07) and Ordinance on conditions for waste management (OG 123/97).
In accordance with above-mentioned regulations Dvokut ECRO conducts all necessary measurements by using GA2000Plus analyzer for landfill gases measurements as well as equipment for drilling and extraction of waste gases.
Landfill gases
Landfill gas is a mixture of hundreds of gases; most common are methane (45 – 60 %) and CO2 (45 – 60 %). Besides those, by volume, the most significant gases are nitrogen, oxygen and ammoniac, sulfur compounds (H2S and SO2) hydrogen, CO and hydrocarbon compounds (benzene, xylene).
The most significant processes that take place in landfill body are bacterial decomposition, volatilization and chemical decomposition. Processes take place in aerobic and anaerobic environment. Potential hazard on every landfill is methane, concentrated from 5 to 15% can be explosive.
MEASURING INSTRUMENTS
Landfill gas measurement instrument – GA2000Plus is mobile instrument for measuring concentration of CH4, CO2, O2, H2 i H2S. Instrument is used on landfill body air risers. If there is no air risers it is necessary to conduct drilling into the landfill body and measure gases in condition of underpressure.
